Reply: Thanks for the suggestion! We will be ordering The Stranger You Seek next week, and when The Stranger In the Room comes out on August 21st, we'll be ordering that as well.
We like to make sure that the books, books-on-CD, DVDs, e-books, and large print copies we buy are titles that you want to see, so suggestions like these help us serve you better. Quilting Magazines
Comment: "Please start to carry Quilting magazines here... I have to go to DeKalb but live in Sycamore where life offers more!"
Reply: It is nice to have a selection of magazines that focus on your interests at your own home library where you can sit and browse the back issues. At this time we don't carry a magazine on quilting or other needle crafts, and we are assessing our community's needs as well as our budget as we consider purchasing a subscription. That being said, the beauty of our membership in PrairieCat -- the 68-member library group that shares materials -- is that you can easily place a hold on items you want, including magazines, that are owned by other libraries. These items usually arrive within a week and will be waiting for you at our circulation desk. Our staff is happy to help you place a hold on the items you're looking for.
Our collection of quilting books can be found in the non-fiction section under 746.46 and if you have any suggestions for new purchases for that section, please let us know. These links to the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest and the DeKalb County Quilter's Guild might be of interest as well.

Books on CD

Reply: We're really glad you enjoy our books on CD. We purchase about 5-7 new books on CD every month, in a variety of styles (mysteries, new fiction, classics, non-fiction, etc.) and try to meet the needs of our community throughout the year. If there are titles you'd like us to purchase we would be happy to consider your specific suggestions. You are also welcome to use the catalog to see what books on CD are available from any of the other libraries within our consortium and request their titles through the inter-library loan system.

Blu-Ray Format
Comment: "Blu-Rays"
Reply: Movies on Blu-Ray discs offer a high-quality picture and greater capability for bonus features as compared to regular DVDs. One of the drawbacks for libraries is that Blu-Ray discs are $8.00 to $10.00 more expensive than standard DVDs, and cost of materials is always a consideration when thinking about adding new collections of library items. We look to the demands of our patrons, both from suggestions in our comment cards and from your use of other libraries' Blu-Ray collections through the inter-library loan system. Currently we haven't seen much demand -- only about 1-2 Blu-Ray discs come via inter-library loan every month. You are welcome to place holds for Blu-Rays discs at other libraries in our system. Any movie that has been owned by a library in the system for more than three months is shared between the libraries.

Lincoln
Comment: "More books on the Civil War and Lincoln."
Reply: President Lincoln and the Civil War are very popular topics right now, as the nation marks the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States. We have quite a number of books on a variety of aspects of Lincoln's life and about the Civil War from battles to emancipation, and they can be found in the 973.7xx section of our non-fiction collection. It could be that the book you are looking for is checked out or not owned by the Sycamore Library, in which case you can put a hold on that book and either our copy or a copy from another library in our 68-member library group will be waiting for you at our circulation desk. If you have looked through our catalog and can't find the book you're looking for please let our staff know the title and we'll determine if the book will be added to our collection.
Have you seen the tower of books about Lincoln? It was installed at a new museum across from Ford's Theatre in Washington DC and includes over 15,000 titles.

Blu-Ray Discs
Suggestions: Please Consider getting Blue Ray discs for patrons to check out. They are becoming very popular. Thanks!
Reply: Buying Blu-Ray discs is a funding and demand issue. We have limited funding for adding new collections to the library and need to have enough demand to warrant shifting funds for a new purpose. I did speak with the Head of Circulation and asked how many Blu-Ray discs are coming to the library through Inter library loan. She said the number is very small about one or two a month. We will not be purchasing movies on Blu-Ray at this time.
You are welcome to place holds for Blu-Rays discs at other libraries in our system. Any movie that has been owned by a library in the system for more than three months is shared between the libraries.

TV Series
Suggestion: Pie in the Sky DVD Series 3&4 I need to know what happens next!
Response: 3&4 are not scheduled to be released on DVD until September 7, 2010.
Our collection policy for TV series is that we will purchase those TV series that are not readily available to the public. This includes shows that are on on premium cable channels or no longer readily available on television and are in high demand for our patrons.
Since TV series are expensive to purchase and there are hundreds of different shows to choose from,, we felt that this was the best way to meet the needs of the residents of Sycamore. If we don't own it, we can borrow it from another library in the our library system or you can watch for it on TV.
Your request meets the high demand and not readily available qualification. We are in the process of ordering the first two seasons and will purchase 3&4 when they are available in September.
